When acquiring a yoga mat, one of the most common questions is how to wash and maintain the hygiene of it. That´s why in this article we are trying to clarify all your doubts. These recommendations are mainly to maintain hygiene conditions and disinfect your yoga mat.
Firstly it´s necessary to clarify that it´s quite complicated that the drawings get stained or dirty, even the white ones like those on the “Little Spring” mat. Normally they get dirty when we use them outdoors and they are exposed to the earth or to the city floor and it´s in these occasions when you can draw on to the use of the washing machine. Fortunately at home or in a yoga school the floor is usually clean so it is very unlikely that your mat get stained.
To keep the mat constantly clean and hygienic we recommend to lightly spray an antibacterial liquid after each practice.
Making an antibacterial and antifungal spray at home is very simple:
- Fill a spray bottle with 200ml of distilled water
- Add 3 – 4 drops of eucalyptus oil
- Add 3 – 4 drops of mint essential oil
- Stir well to mix all ingredients well
Before spraying this liquid on your mat remember to shake the bottle well so that the mixture is homogeneous.
Although we have tested the mixture on the mats and it is completely safe for the designs we recommend always try the spray on one corner of the mat first to make sure it will not affect the drawing.
It is best to maintain a constant cleanliness of our mat so that we extend its useful life and keep it in good conditions. We recommend washing it at least once a week if you have frequent practice.
To wash any of our mats you can follow this steps:
- Rinse the surface with water and a cloth.
- Spray the mat thoroughly with the anti-bacterial spray.
- Re-rinse the surface with water.
- Let the mat dry completely.
This way you will get a completely clean mat with a wonderful smell.
We recommend to leave your yoga mat unrolled as much as possible to increase its useful life.
It is very important that you don´t scrub the mat aggressively or use chemical sprays on it as this could affect not only the drawing but also the materials.
All these cares can be applied to all yoga mats regardless of the material.
Washing in the washing machine
It is very important that you have in mind that the only mats that can be washed in the washing machine are microfiber ones. The surface of a cork yoga mat could be completely damage by the washing machine.
Cleaning the mats with the washing machine is very simple and is a good way to achieve extreme cleanliness. However, we recommend that you do it as little as possible as it could decrease the quality of the product.
Even so, if your mat is very dirty and you decide to use the washing machine, keep in mind the following recommendations:
- DO NOT use bleach as it could seriously affect the design.
- Use only a soft or “by hand” wash program.
- Do not use spin-dry since it would deform the corners and the mat would be damaged unnecessarily.
The microfiber mats dry very quickly in the air since they only absorb water in the upper part so it is not necessary to spin-dry them.
